Market Opportunity Navigator – PhD cohort program SS22

March 24, 2022

The Market Opportunity Navigator Workshop took place on March 16, 2022. The core topic of the workshop was to identify market opportunities and to rank them according to their attractiveness.

The Market Opportunity Navigator was conducted in 3 steps. The teams received input from Marcel Werle, accompanied by a case study in which the Market Opportunity Navigator was explained on the basis of the startup flyability. The teams were given time to work through the steps together and to exchange ideas with each other in a further session. The Market Opportunity Navigator helps the teams in the first step to identify different market opportunities for their respective startup idea. In this process, the possible application, its respective potential customers and the market opportunity are determined for the pursued innovative technology. This first step is designed to help teams identify what market opportunities their startup idea offers.

In the second step, the teams evaluated the attractiveness of their market opportunities. In doing so, they determined the potential as well as the challenge for each of their opportunities.  This makes it possible to rank the respective market opportunities in order to find out whether this opportunity should be pursued.

In the third step, the evaluated opportunities were jointly classified in the "Attractiveness Map" to identify the "Gold Mine", the "Moon Shot", the "Quick Win" and the "Questionable" opportunities.  After this, the teams presented one of their opportunities and gave each other feedback on it. At the end of the workshop, the teams received input on how today's workshop fits into the EXIST application. This concerned chapter 4 - Innovation and chapter 5 - Market.
