Module 1: Entrepreneurship: Management of research and development

Research and development is particularly important for technology-oriented companies. Against this background, the module deals with all relevant issues.

The two courses (lecture and tutorial) “Technology and Innovation Management” of the first module are offered every summer semester.

The module provides a comprehensive introduction to the management of innovation as well as research and development, with a special focus on technology-oriented companies. The module is divided into two main components: a theory-based lecture and a practice-oriented exercise.

Contents of the lecture
The lecture conveys the theoretical and conceptual foundations of innovation and R&D management. The following aspects are covered in particular:

  • Fundamentals of innovation management (e.g., innovation process, technology acquisition, intellectual property rights, bootlegging, etc.)
  • Innovation management methods (e.g., product development tools, prototyping, FMEA, TQM, etc.)
  • Project management (e.g., innovation projects, project atlas, etc.)
  • Planning and control (e.g., degree of innovation, target costing, innovation balanced scorecard, key performance indicators, etc.)
  • From development to series production (e.g., lifecycle management, sustainability, etc.)

Practice-oriented exercise
The accompanying tutorial aims to apply the theoretical concepts in practice. External speakers are invited to present concrete examples from a corporate context.

Students will learn:
