What contribution can technological innovations make to climate protection?

October 3, 2023

Prof. Brem was invited to give a plenary lecture on this topic at the 7th 100% Climate Neutrality Conference.

Looking at the current figures on the state of the world's climate, one is left perplexed. How can we stop global warming and at the same time adapt to the change that is already taking place? The Climate Neutrality Conference in Sonderborg, Denmark, is already dealing with this complex of issues for the 7th year. It is organised with various partners from science, business and society. The special feature is certainly that they come from both sides of the German-Danish border.

In interdisciplinary formats, there were plenary and expert lectures, a panel discussion, as well as an award ceremony.  The content ranged from sustainable entrepreneurship and the protection of permafrost soils to CO2 storage and new photovoltaic technologies.

The plenary lecture by Prof. Brem dealt with the topic "Technology Innovation in times of climate change". In addition to an overview of technological solutions to combat climate change, he focused on the role of standardisation, dominant designs, path dependencies and regulatory frameworks. After all, it takes from 10 to 70 years from prototype to market launch for various technologies. This factor is often still underestimated when it comes to combating climate change in the short term. In this context, he also suggested measures that companies, but also every individual, can take. In the economy, much more focus must be placed on ecosystems, and for citizens on their individual contribution. The latter was summed up by Joern M. Clausen, son of Danfoss founder Mads Clausen. According to this, every picture taken with a smartphone and stored on the cloud already consumes 100 mg of CO2. So it's also up to each individual.
