Wir konzentrieren uns auf die Wurzeln der "constraint-based innovation"-Ansätze, um zu untersuchen, wie sie in der nächsten Generation von Technologieinnovationen unter Verwendung eines frugalen technischen Ansatzes eingesetzt werden können.

Was ist das Phänomen?

Technologische Innovationen beherrschen unseren Alltag. Aber der Prozess, welche Technologie sich wie durchsetzt, ist meist nicht (präzise) vorhersehbar. Dazu kommt die Tendenz, dass Entwicklungsländer immer mehr zum Hot Spot von Innovationen werden.

Mit ihren Wurzeln in Schwellenmärkten haben es verschiedene Innovationsansätze unter dem Schlagwort frugale Innovationen in westliche Märkte geschafft. Von der ursprünglichen Konzentration auf Schwellenländer oder "Bottom of the Pyramid" ("BoP") Kunden, werden diese heute angewendet, um globale Lösungen zu entwickeln.

Was ist darüber bekannt?

Technologische Innovationen werden durch neue Geschäftsmodelle getrieben, und können durch Methoden in den frühen Phasen des Innovationsprozesses antizipiert werden. Der Wettbewerb neuer Technologien wird immer härter, hier sind neue Ansätze gefragt.

Durch Frugal Engineering entstehen Innovationen, die mit dem in Forschung und Entwicklung weit verbreiteten Paradigma „immer mehr, immer besser“ bzw. „Over-engineering“ bricht. Es sollen einfache, technisch anspruchsvolle Lösungen entstehen, um neue (Preis-)Segmente zu erschließen. Dieses gilt es mit verschiedenen Ansätzen zu erreichen. Dazu gehören insbesondere „Localisation“ mit globalen Fokus, Neuentwicklung vs. Anpassung, Einsatz neuer Technologien und Preis- und Marketingstrategie.
