In a recent article by IEEE Spectrum, Prof. Alexander Brem, head of the ENI Institute and Vice-Rector for Transfer and International Affairs at the University of Stuttgart, illustrates how engineers can adopt an entrepreneurial mindset in their current jobs—without founding a startup. Instead of thinking, “Someone should do this better,” he emphasizes the motto, “I can do this.” With technical expertise, problem-solving experience, and prototyping skills, new ideas can be outlined and systematically developed.
Prof. Brem highlights that it is not just about big visions, but primarily about closing the gap between idea and implementation—the so-called “intention-action gap.” He recommends taking small, concrete steps, questioning established processes with curiosity, and deliberately composing diverse teams. Timing is also crucial—especially in emerging technology fields such as AI. Innovative thinking is not reserved solely for founders; it can also have a significant impact within existing organizations.
