Teams from the Startup Region Stuttgart: SpinMagIC

October 4, 2024

"Teams from the Startup Region Stuttgart" is a format of the regularly published newsletter for Startup & Entrepreneurship at the University of Stuttgart. It presents startups from the Stuttgart startup region who tell the story of their startup and provide tips for those interested in founding a company.

Who is part of the founding team and who is responsible for what tasks or has what set of skills?

Anh Chu (Electrical Engineering) is responsible for circuit design and EPR design, Belal Alnajjar (Physics) works on the  magnet design and quantum sensors, Jakob Fitschen (Business Administration) is in charge of business development and Finance and Michele Segantini (Physics) is responsible for EPR applications and market analysis.

A brief description

We are developing a quantum sensor that can be used to measure free radicals at low cost. Free radicals play an important role in food quality control, battery monitoring and medicine.

The background of the development

The project is based on the scientific work of Dr. Prof. Jens Anders (University of Stuttgart) and Dr. Prof. Klaus Lips (Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin), who continue to support the project as mentors.

Anh Chu (hardware - electrical engineering), Belal Alnajjar (hardware - magnets) and Michele Segantini (application) became familiar with EPR on a Chip through their PhDs. EPR on a Chip was a project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the University of Stuttgart, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, Max-Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion, KIT and Bruker GmbH.

In the course of their PhD, the idea of the extent to which EPR on a chip could be used for the commercial market was further developed.

In the summer of 2023, Jakob Fitschen (Finance) joined the team to round off the team's organizational and economic skills.

Together, the team applied for EXIST Transfer of Research funding and was accepted after an elaborate letter of application and a presentation to the expert jury.

What was the biggest challenge for you last year?

The bureaucratic effort required for the application and everything associated with it.

Tips for founders

Ask about and outline the process from application to funding so that you always know which phase you are in and what the best next steps are. Identify important contacts (administration, project management organization, etc.) and involve them in the process at an early stage. Network with teams that have already successfully applied for EXIST research transfers.

Area of application

Olive oil, beer, batteries, medicine, research, mineral oil
