Robert Cooper and Alexander Brem recently published their article "The Adoption of AI in New Product Development" in the journal Research-Technology Management.
The article examines the current implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in new product development (NPD) and its impact on companies. Preliminary results from a study of US and Central European companies are used to analyze the current state of AI integration for 13 major applications in NPD. The results show that the application of AI in NPD enables gains and reduced development times for early adopters, but companies are still reluctant to implement it. The study reveals that not a single company surveyed has fully adopted AI for NPD, with 75 percent having implemented no AI application at all.
Furthermore, the study reveals a generally weak intention to implement AI across all 13 application areas, with Central European companies only slightly ahead of their US counterparts. In light of this, six recommendations are proposed for companies to integrate AI into NPD, as delayed implementation risks losing competitive advantage.
