Standardisation and Dominant Designs: Workshop at EURAS 2024 at TU Delft

July 2, 2024

Prof. Brem participated in the 2024 edition of the European Academy for Standardisation with a presentation and workshop on dominant design research.

Prof. Brem attended the 28th EURAS Annual Standardisation Conference, the leading gathering of scholars in the field of standardization research. This event was held at Delft University of Technology in Delft, The Netherlands, from June 19-21, 2024. It was organized jointly by the European Academy for Standardisation (EURAS), collaborating with the Royal Netherlands Standardization Institute (NEN), TU Delft, TU Eindhoven, Rotterdam School of Management, and Tilburg University.

The EURAS Conferences, with their origins in the mid-1990s, are established as a worldwide forum for academics, industry professionals, and policymakers to discuss the evolving landscape of standardisation. This year's focus on comprehensive standardisation highlighted its importance in addressing global societal challenges.

Our institute recently participated in a 90-minute workshop on "Dominant Designs in the Context of Standardization and Ecosystems: Where Are We, and Where to Go?" organized by Geerten van der Kaa. The session opened with remarks from Geerten van der Kaa, followed by an impulse presentation by Alexander Brem and Petra Nylund on the current state and perspectives of dominant design research.

Participants, including Knut Blind, Vladimir Sobota, Filipp Grillo, Dong-hyu Kim, and Geerten van der Kaa, each contributed their unique perspectives on dominant design research in a roundtable format. The workshop then shifted its focus to developing a joint research outlook, identifying three key topics for future research on dominant designs. This collaborative effort, moderated by Alexander Brem and Geerten van der Kaa, made everyone feel included and part of a shared mission.

The session concluded with summary presentations from each group and closing remarks by Geerten van der Kaa. Results show the relevance and interest of the community in advancing the discussion and collaboration in the field of dominant design research within standardization and ecosystems.

We were eagerly looking forward to this opportunity to engage with the international standardisation community and contribute to future research agenda on dominant designs.
