In his presentation, Dr. Wiegmann gave exciting insights into current research on standardization and presented two of his most recent scientific papers. His research sheds light on how standardization organizations act as networks and what value companies place on the decisions made by these organizations.
Dr. Wiegmann began with a general introduction to standardization research and emphasized the central role of standards in innovation processes. In particular, he discussed the different mechanisms of standardization, which he examined in one of his current research articles. He distinguished between three main types of standardization:
-
Committee-based Standardization: cooperation mechanism as a basis
-
Market-based Standardization: competitive mechanism as a basis
-
Policy-based Standardization: hierarchical mechanism to impose solutions
In the second part of his presentation, Dr. Wiegmann presented a comprehensive review article that analyzes the current state of research on standardization. This review article systematizes the scientific findings on standardization processes and identifies open research questions.
The relevance of his work for research at the ENI was particularly exciting. There were numerous overlaps in terms of content with Prof. Brem's work and with several PhD projects at the institute.
The open exchange in the afternoon provided an excellent opportunity for participants to discuss their own research questions and identify possible points of contact.
The seminar once again demonstrated the importance of interdisciplinary research for understanding innovation processes and standardization mechanisms. We would like to thank Dr. Wiegmann for his inspiring presentation and the stimulating discussions!
